As August comes to a close and we transition into fall, it's time to look back at the eclectic mix of books that filled my month. From gripping psychological thrillers to epic fantasy and swoon-worthy romances, my August 2024 reading list was packed with intense emotions, unforgettable characters, and plenty of twists and turns. I’m excited to share my thoughts on each of the books I devoured this month!
1. Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Kicking off the month with a classic fantasy was such a great decision. Eragon was an epic journey into a world of dragons, magic, and adventure. Paolini’s world-building is incredible, and I found myself completely immersed in Eragon’s quest alongside his dragon Saphira. If you’re a fan of high fantasy, this book is a must-read. It’s packed with action and heart, though at times, the pacing felt a bit slow. Overall, it was a fantastic start to my month!
2. One of Our Own by Lucinda Berry
This psychological thriller had me hooked from page one. One of Our Own is a chilling tale that dives into family secrets, mental illness, and the lengths people will go to protect their loved ones. Lucinda Berry does a masterful job of crafting complex characters that feel incredibly real, making the suspense even more palpable. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, and the twists were genuinely shocking.
3. How to Fail at Flirting by Denise Williams
I picked up How to Fail at Flirting for a lighter, more romantic read, and it was everything I hoped for. This charming rom-com follows a professor who decides to break out of her comfort zone and spice up her life—and what ensues is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. Naya’s journey of self-discovery and healing, paired with a swoon-worthy romance, made this book an absolute joy. Denise Williams writes with humor and heart, and it’s impossible not to root for the characters.
4. Notorious in New Hampshire by Patti Benning
I’ve been loving Patti Benning’s Rambling RV Cozy Mysteries series, and Notorious in New Hampshire didn’t disappoint. This cozy mystery was a fun, easy read with just the right amount of intrigue and charm. The quirky characters and picturesque setting made this a perfect late-summer escape. If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries with a touch of humor, this series is one to check out.
5. The Next Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine
Wow. The Next Mrs. Parrish was a wild, twisty ride that left me breathless. Liv Constantine’s psychological thriller dives deep into the lives of two women whose fates become dangerously intertwined. The plot twists are absolutely insane, and I found myself questioning everything as the story unfolded. This is a must-read if you love thrillers with unreliable narrators and shocking reveals!
6. The Guest by B.A. Paris
B.A. Paris is known for her tension-filled domestic thrillers, and The Guest was no exception. This novel had me on edge from the first chapter, with its dark and claustrophobic atmosphere. The unraveling of secrets kept me guessing, and the pacing was perfectly executed. While the ending wasn’t quite as explosive as I’d hoped, the journey there was incredibly tense and gripping.
7. Creep by Jennifer Hillier
Jennifer Hillier never disappoints when it comes to psychological thrillers, and Creep was no exception. This dark, twisted story follows a professor’s dangerous obsession and the chilling consequences of her actions. Hillier’s writing is razor-sharp, and the psychological tension had me glued to the page. The characters are flawed but fascinating, and I found myself captivated by the disturbing spiral of events.
8. Freak by Jennifer Hillier
After finishing Creep, I couldn’t resist diving straight into Freak, the sequel. If anything, this book was even more intense and sinister than the first. Hillier masterfully ratchets up the suspense, and the stakes feel even higher. It’s the kind of book that makes you question what you would do in a similarly terrifying situation. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you love dark psychological thrillers, this one’s for you.
9. Long Time No Sea by Portia MacIntosh
On a lighter note, Long Time No Sea by Portia MacIntosh was a breath of fresh air. This delightful rom-com is full of witty banter, seaside adventures, and a healthy dose of romance. The chemistry between the main characters was fantastic, and MacIntosh’s humor shines through in every scene. This was the perfect beach read, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the mood for a lighthearted escape.
10. Missin' Out by Patti Benning
Missin' Out is another cozy mystery from Patti Benning, and I enjoyed it just as much as her other works. The small-town charm, colorful characters, and engaging mystery made this a great way to wind down after some of the more intense thrillers I read this month. This series is worth exploring if you’re looking for a feel-good mystery.
11. A Love Hate Thing by Whitney D. Grandison
This YA romance was a pleasant surprise. A Love Hate Thing explores complex themes of privilege, race, and forgiveness while weaving in a sweet enemies-to-lovers storyline. The emotional depth of the characters and the way they grapple with their pasts made this more than just a simple romance. Whitney D. Grandison’s writing is beautiful and heartfelt, making this one of the highlights of my reading month.
12. Happy Place by Emily Henry
I’ve heard so many great things about Happy Place by Emily Henry, and it more than lived up to the hype. Henry masters crafting realistic, relatable relationships, and this book is no exception. The emotional layers in the story, coupled with the witty dialogue, kept me completely invested in the characters’ journey. It’s the kind of book that makes you laugh, cry, and swoon all in one sitting.
13. The Library of Lost Things by Laura Taylor Namey
The Library of Lost Things was an absolute gem. This YA novel about a book-loving girl who works in a bookstore hit all the right notes for me. Laura Taylor Namey’s writing is lyrical and full of heart, and the story explores themes of family, mental health, and finding one’s place in the world. This book reminded me of why I love reading in the first place—it’s a beautiful, tender story about the power of books and the people who love them.
14. Bread Coffee Magic by Jessica Rosenberg
Bread Coffee Magic was a cozy, whimsical read that felt like a warm hug. The combination of baking, magic, and friendship made this book incredibly charming. Jessica Rosenberg’s writing has a soothing quality, and the magical realism elements were beautifully woven into the everyday life of the characters. It’s the perfect book for anyone who enjoys a little magic with their slice of life stories.
15. Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica
I ended the month with Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica, a gripping psychological thriller that kept me up way too late. Kubica is a master of suspense, and this story of a woman who takes in a mysterious stranger and her baby is filled with tension and unexpected twists. The dual perspectives add layers to the narrative, making it a thrilling ride from start to finish.
